DESCRIPTION
Sarissa is the epitome of the MMYD ethos: Aesthetically engineered yacht design. She is the pinnacle of over 40 years’ design experience, and the studio claims her as its flagship with enormous pride.
With Sarissa, we have balanced the latest engineering solutions, with beautiful, dynamic lines and safe, efficient sail handling.
The yacht’s dramatic profile embodies the Client’s brief in every way, from the low sleek superstructure and the large square top mainsail to the open plan cockpit and striking panels of glass. Sailing fast, cruising in comfort, turning heads, owning the racecourse and confident passage making across the pacific – Sarissa can do it all.
As part of the design/build process, a full-size plywood mockup of the deck, superstructure, cabin top as well as inside the saloon was created. An important part of the brief was the open connection to be achieved between the saloon and cockpit. The height differential was minimized by three low steps and a 3.7-metre-wide, four-panel sliding door opens completely to join the spaces.
The carbon fibre superstructure creates smaller mullions, which allow for greater interior headroom whilst maintaining that low exterior profile. The mullion cross sections are also reduced, increasing visibility through the large, curved glass panels that encase those within.
Adding large vertical feature windows to the cinema snug and dining room, created design challenges due to their placement either side of the highly loaded chainplate area, a structurally sensitive area of the hull. A complete FEA (Finite Element Analysis) model of the hull structure was created to confirm the feasibility of these openings and to minimise the added structural weight added by reinforcements.
Whilst the client’s priority was for performance sailing, there has been no compromise on the at-anchor mode. The flush foredeck area boasts secreted lifestyle amenities – there’s a large climbing wall on the inside of the tender garage door, and a Jacuzzi.
The aft section opens to reveal a large beach club, which hosts a bar, seating area and sauna. The carbon beach club door is an engineering marvel in itself, doubling the size to an impressive 20m² The cockpit can be covered with a large boom tent, and here the owner and guests can relax and dine.
A mid-ships Lazarette stores all the toys, housing everything from foil boards to kites, with gym equipment located on the starboard side. The generously-proportioned side platforms open the boat all the way through and provide safe access to board the yacht or to swim from either side, and another embarkation point to the 60ft chase boat.
Practical deck details were designed to blend seamlessly into the boat or disappear completely, the bollards are retractable, the fairleads flush, and sail storage drums in the bow allow for efficient sail changes requiring minimal human interaction. The port and starboard helm stations have dual consoles to allow sail controls to be operated separately from the main steering stations. The primary focus was to achieve effortless efficiency and systems that are easy to use.
Design detailing was extensively refined with the Client’s team. Carbon fibre was used where possible to reduce weight, but it also provided opportunity to push the limits on aesthetic design details such as the wheels, helm and sailing console design, deck hatches and, possibly most notably, the mainsheet arch.
Such a powerful square top mainsail applies large loads through the mainsheet, so being able to reduce the section inertia of the arch has a significant impact on the visual size of the arch. EC6 rigging was used to support the large span and reduce the cross section further. The soft shape in the corners was refined to help racking, and aesthetically the arch has become an iconic element of the yacht’s overall look.
Sarissa embodies all that we try to achieve with regard to aesthetic engineering and progressive yacht design. She is a high-performance sailing superyacht of the most incredible stature.
